What is Wound Dressing? | An Overview

A wound dressing is a material applied to a wound to protect it, promote healing, and prevent infection. [3, 4, 5, 6]

Protects the wound from external contamination and trauma, Absorbs excess exudate (fluid), Provides a moist environment for healing, and Promotes cell growth and collagen production. [3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12]

  • Gauze: Sterile, absorbent cloth used for cleaning and packing wounds. [5, 13, 14, 15, 16]
  • Hydrocolloid: Self-adhesive dressings that form a gel when in contact with moisture, absorbing exudate and maintaining a moist environment. [17, 18, 19]
  • Foam: Absorbent dressings that provide cushioning and protection. [20, 21, 22]
  • Alginate: Dressings made from seaweed that absorb large amounts of exudate and form a gel-like substance. [23, 24, 25]
  • Silver dressings: Contain silver ions that have antimicrobial properties. [26]

  • Clean the wound thoroughly with soap and water or saline.
  • Apply the dressing according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Secure the dressing with tape or a bandage.
  • Change the dressing as needed, typically when it becomes wet, soiled, or uncomfortable. [28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33]

  • Do not use wound dressings on deep wounds or wounds with open bone. [34, 35, 36]
  • Avoid applying dressings to areas with active bleeding. [37, 38]
